Parmit Chilana is an Assistant Professor in human-computer interaction (HCI) at the School of Computing Science at Simon Fraser University (SFU). Parmit’s core research in HCI focuses on inventing and deploying user-centered software help and learning techniques for feature-rich applications in a variety of domains, such as 3D modeling, education, health, and software development.

I am a Marie Curie Postdoctoral scholar with Dr. Hude Quan and Dr. Catherine Eastwood at the Centre for Health Informatics with a secondary affiliation to Dr. Sheelagh Carpendale‘s former InnoVis group at the Interactions Lab at Department of Computer Science, University of Calgary. My research focuses on information visualization and human-computer interaction. I am interested in supporting people in understanding and making sense of healthcare data. My dissertation research concerned understanding the benefits of using large, high-resolution displays to support this goal through interaction techniques and data visualization.

Narges Ashtari

Narges Ashtari is a PhD student in the School of Computing Science at Simon Fraser University supervised by Prof. Parmit Chilana. Her broad research interest is human-computer interaction (HCI), with a focus on enabling and encouraging exploratory programming especially making Augmented and Virtual reality experiences. Her recent project involves defining the key barriers AR/VR creators face and designing support tools for simplifying their authoring process. Earlier, Narges completed her MSc in 2018 in the School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SFU) specializing in computational design and designing CAD systems. Narges also has a multidisciplinary background holding a BSc in Architectural Engineering from Art University of Isfahan (2015).

Anjali Khurana

Anjali Khurana is a Master’s student in the School of Computing Science at Simon Fraser University with a focus on Human-computer interaction under the supervision of Prof. Parmit Chilana. Before coming to SFU, Anjali worked on the research and development of software social innovations for her co-founded company which went on to receive grants awarded by India's Infosys Foundation. She also participated in a six-month internship in product development in Atlanta, USA and a two-month technical mentorship program at IIT Hyderabad. Anjali completed her Bachelor’s in Computer science and Engineering from PEC University of Technology, India in 2018.

My research seeks to understand educators' practices and motivations as they integrate a growing variety of software tools into their teaching and learn to customize those tools to better suit their classroom needs. From these insights, I design novel systems that help educators discover, explore, and implement relevant software customizations that improve the utility and usability of their digital classroom ecosystems.
